Male bikers go through life riding with friends, catching the wind in our hair, the smells, the sights, we work, we spend time with families, but we tend to ignore the subtle signs of aging or we simply deny that anything is happening. Oh, yeah, and we all like SEX. Have I got your attention?

Last May ’09 I had a wakeup call. The Doc told me he didn’t like sticking fingers in folks, asked if I’d take a PSA test. “It’s a prostate specific antigen test, a test for prostate cancer.” Prior finger poking docs told me I had an enlarged prostate, I took saw palmetto and recently started using ED helpers, so I told him to go ahead. You know the result. Yup, reading of 7.27 on a 1 - 10 scale. Further testing showed cancer staring at my lymph nodes so out it came via the new Da Vinci robotic surgery. Estimates are I was two year’s away from dying. I’m fine, back to a normal life. I was lucky and praised and gave thanks to my family doctor and the urologist. Much better result than those you read or hear about with prostate cancer.

I was back to riding within three weeks of surgery and naturally talked to guys about what happened. Only half a dozen out of hundreds of men I talked to had either heard of or had a PSA test. Wake up, guys! Your life and your sex life is at stake. Fact: 100% of the male population on planet earth will get prostate cancer. It’s only a matter of when. If nothing else kills you first, you will die of it. So, get off your butts and get a simple blood test.

To further educate my biker friends in Minnesota and to share my survival with others, I have organized a benefit and awareness ride. The first annual Ride For Dads Prostate Cancer Awareness is scheduled for June 19, 2010. Sign up is at 9:00 a.m. at Zylstra Harley Davidson in Elk River, MN. Coffee and donuts will be provided. Kickstands up at 10:30. We have scheduled stops along a well-planned scenic route at Patriot Lanes in St. Francis, Hunter’s Inn in East Bethel, Roadhouse Bar & Grill in Chicago City, Big Daddy’s in Harris and ending with a tent party at Fatboy’s in East Bethel. Entertainment will be provided by Circle Back, American Gypsy, and Ross William Perry. There will be door prizes given away at each stop and a silent auction at Fatboy’s. In addition, information will be available about detection and treatment options provided by urologists and representatives from American Medical System.

Cost for the ride and tent party: $25 for rider, $15 for passenger, which includes a commemorative t-shirt and patch; or $15 and $10 which includes a commemorative patch only. Reduced price for attendance at Fatboy’s Tent Party only, non-bikers welcome. Extra shirts and patches will also be available for sale.
